AM Solutions successfully develops and mass-produces impact resistant agent for PPS

AM Solution (CEO Jin-taek Hwang) announced that it will start developing and mass-producing and selling an impact-resistant agent for PPS (polyphenylene sulfide), a super-engineering plastic with world-class impact strength.

AM Solution is a Jiangsu materials company specializing in high-performance elastomers (elastomers), which has been focusing on the high-performance golf ball material business since it was founded as a venture company in 2014.

The development of the impact resistant agent for the super engineering plastic PPS was initiated with the support of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Material Parts Technology Development Project, and was developed for the first time in Korea through a two-year development process in collaboration with a large domestic company.

PPS material is a high-value-added material that costs more than five times more than general plastic PP (polypropylene) material. PPS resin is heat-resistant for continuous use in high-temperature environments above 200℃, and has excellent coefficient of linear expansion and dimensional stability. In addition, it is lighter and cheaper than metal, so it is considered an indispensable material for engine parts. However, despite its durability, PPS has a low resistance to instantaneous impact, making it unsuitable for materials such as devices that may be subject to shock. For this reason, PPS is often blended with flexible elastomeric materials such as rubber for automotive applications that require cold-impact resistance.

These flexible elastomers are called impact-resistant materials. In the PTC (positive temperature coefficient) heater frame of electric vehicles, PPS materials blended with impact-resistant agents are being used to improve cold impact resistance while maintaining light weight and heat resistance. The use of PPS material is gradually expanding as a lightweight material due to the expansion of the driving range of electric vehicles, and the domestic PTC heater frame material market is currently dominated by overseas imported PPS materials, so localization of the material is required.

The impact resistant material for PPS developed and commercialized by AM Solution is a polyolefin elastomer (elastomer) material containing glycidyl functional groups by AM Solution's proprietary reaction extrusion method. Currently, a domestic patent application has been completed.

When applied to PPS, it showed an impact strength result of 110% compared to other materials with the highest performance in the world, and it also has the advantage of not generating flash when injected. In addition, the price competitiveness of the material was secured by more than 20% by applying the proprietary technology of the reaction extrusion method.

AMSolution's PPS impact-resistant material has been verified by a major Korean company and will be delivered in the second half of this year after receiving an order from a domestic automotive material company. AMSolution expects that the impact resistant material for PPS will be launched in the domestic market in the second half of 2022 and will grow into a high-value-added product with sales of 10 billion won in 2025 by securing sales partners in overseas markets.
